The worst effects of the oil spill have been seen along 150 km of the northern Lebanese coast. Around 15,000 tonnes of fuel oil has poured into the sea from the bombed power plant in Jieh south of Beirut, causing severe environmental damage to marine and shore-dwelling species including fish,
crustaceans and turtles, whose hatchlings have been caught in the slick.
Greenpeace has joined other environmental groups to document and assess the environmental impact, which the Lebanese Ministry of Environment estimates will cost $137 million to clean up. The spill is thought to be the Mediterranean's worst ever.
