The Deep Sea Conservation Coalition has condemned northern fishing nations European Community, South Korea, and Russia for blocking measures which would have protected deep-sea life in the South Pacific. Those participants stubbornly opposed attempts by countries negotiating a new regional fisheries management organisation to put in place strong measures, including measures that would have protected vulnerable marine ecosystems from the damage caused by bottom trawl fishing in international waters.

Actress Sigourney Weaver today joined a coalition representing more than 60 conservation organizations from around the world at United Nations (UN) headquarters in New York to call for new action to confront lawless bottom trawling in deep sea fisheries, a practice scientists say is destroying some of the world's rarest and most sensitive ocean habitats.

Early today, Greenpeace activists locked themselves to a high seas bottom trawler to prevent it from leaving Port Nelson. Four activists boarded the Chang Xing, locking themselves to the mast and other parts of the vessel.

Today’s United Nations Secretary General’s Report of measures taken by states to protect vulnerable deep-sea life from destructive fishing practices such as high seas bottom trawling has confirmed that the protection these areas receive is woefully inadequate and that urgent action is required now by the international community.

Greenpeace stops pirate fishing vessels in European port

This morning Greenpeace activists prevented four pirate fishing trawlers from leaving Rostock harbour with chains and oil drums. One vessel was chained to the harbour wall and hung with a banner reading 'Stop pirate fishing'. A fifth trawler left Rostock last night - all five are on the EU blacklist for having been engaged in illegal, unregulated and unreported fishing - also know as pirate fishing - in the Atlantic. All have recently changed names and flags and were trying to leave port to plunder the high seas again.
