Defending our Oceans is a big task, we can’t do it alone! So, along with our Ocean Defenders around the world, the following organizations are helping to defend the world’s oceans and the plants, animals and people who depend on them. We want to recognize them here as honourary Ocean Defenders.*

New Internationalist

New Internationalist magazine has done a fantastic issue on "The State of the World's Ocean".  Check out their special Ocean Defender page.

Environmental Justice Foundation

Earlier in the expedition, we worked with the Environmental Justice Foundation to carry out a joint investigation in West Africa during which over 100 vessels were documented. The evidence gathered suggests that almost half the boats observed were engaged in, or linked to illegal fishing activities.

Mineral Policy Institute

The Mineral Policy Institute (MPI) is an Australian-based non-government organisation specialising in advocacy, campaigning and research to prevent environmentally and socially destructive mining, minerals and energy projects in Australia, Asia and the Pacific.  Like us, they are working to stop the pollution caused by the Lafayette mine in the Philippines.

IFAW

Earlier in our expedition, we worked with the International Fund for Animal Welfare in the Azores, helping document whales for their Whale ID project.

WWF

We have been working with the WWF in the Mediterranean, helping to document and bring attention to the plight of tuna and other species in the region.

Deep Sea Conservation Coalition

We are part of the Deep Sea Conservation Coalition, a growing number of organisations working together to protect seamounts, cold-water corals and vulnerable deep-sea ecosystems.

Antarctic and Southern Ocean Coalition

We are also part of the Antarctic and Southern Ocean Coalition, working to ensure that the Antarctic contintent, surrounding islands and Great Southern Ocean remain the world’s last unspoiled wilderness.

University of the Azores

While we were in the Azores, we worked with scientists from the University of the Azores as part of an ongoing UAC research program. The program is intended to establish greater scientific knowledge of the importance of deep-sea habitats and marine life.

Mother Jones Ocean Voyager

Mother Jones magazine has created a five part series called Ocean Voyager about the threats facing our oceans.  You might recognize some familiar faces from on board the Esperanza…
