Greenpeace exists because this fragile earth deserves a voice. It needs solutions. It needs change. It needs action. We are a global non-profit organisation, with a presence in 40 countries across Europe, the Americas, Asia and the Pacific.
We exist to expose environmental criminals, and to challenge government
and corporations when they fail to live up to their mandate to
safeguard our environment and our future.
And we believe that the struggle to preserve the future of our planet
is not about us. It's about you. Greenpeace speaks for 2.8 million
supporters worldwide, and encourages many millions more than that to
take action every day.
As one of the longest banners we've ever made summed things up with a
quote from American Indian Chief Seattle, "When the last tree is cut,
the last river poisoned, and the last fish dead, we will discover that
we can't eat money..."
Our key principles are:
Bearing witness
Greenpeace was founded on the Quaker tradition of bearing witness. This
principle states that once you have witnessed an injustice, you have a
moral obligation to choose whether to act against it or not.
Non-violent Direct Action
We accept a moral obligation to act against crimes against the
environment and peace, and to directly confront the perpetrators of
these crimes where they are happening.
We reject the belief that violence is a legitimate or effective means
of achieving change in the world. Non-violent Direct Action is a
means of engaging in or provoking social conflict without the use of
violence.
Political independence
We have no political party affiliation. We do not endorse candidates for office, we do not endorse political parties.
Financial independence
Since our earliest days, we decided that in order to preserve our
independence, we would never accept a donation that might compromise
our ability or willingness to campaign for our planet's future.
We do not accept money from governments or corporations. We turn
down such donations every day.
Internationalism
Pollution knows no borders. We are citizens of the world, and do not
take sides with any specific state, but seek international solutions to
environmental threats.
